Stephanie Nugent MFA, California State University -Long Beach (2000), BFA The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (1991), teaches contemporary dance technique, improvisation, composition, dance history/appreciation and creative movement.

During posts as a full-time faculty member in the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at the California Institute of the Arts (2007-2014) and Associate Professor of Dance at University of California-Santa Barbara (2001-2007), Ms. Nugent trained aspiring professionals in contemporary dance technique, composition, and improvisational practices, while her teaching career began as a member of the Ririe Woodbury Dance Company (1991-1995), traveling internationally to conduct lecture demonstrations and workshops in modern dance and creative movement for children, adults, and special populations.

She served as the Director of Dance at the North Carolina Governor's School West 1995-1996, Assistant to the Director of Education for Malashock Dance and Company 1995-1997, and as faculty at Henry St. Settlement in NYC 1996.

From 1995-2000 Ms. Nugent studied and practiced Zen Touch Shiatsu through the School of Healing Arts in Pacific Beach, CA, developed a passion for the practice of Contact Improvisation through workshops and jams lead by Nina Martin and Lower Left, and returned to graduate school at California State University -Long Beach.

While a resident of Southern California, Ms. Nugent established Nugent Dance as a vehicle for her choreography, improvisation scores, interdisciplinary collaboration, and educational outreach. She taught at several community colleges, cultivated an active presence as a performer and teacher of contact improvisation, and began facilitating HOURGLASS, a live music and dance, inter-active community event, composed by partner Robin Cox.

She has lead workshops in CI at the Santa Monica Jam, LA ID Fest, West Coast Contact Improvisation Jam, Virginia Common Wealth University, The Portland Contact Improv Jam, SOMA Fest, and with Shel Wagner Rasch founded and hosted the East-side Contact Improvisation Lab Jam, at ARC Pasadena.

After eighteen years based in southern California, Ms. Nugent made the deeply rewarding, though life-altering choice to move with her family to Indianapolis. Currently, an Indy-based freelance artist/educator, she brings her years of experience to a range of academic and community populations including Indiana University -Bloomington, The Ohio State University, Ball State University, Anderson University, Motus Dance Theater, Indy Convergence, Great Lakes Area Contact Improvisation Enthusiasts Retreat (G.L.A.C.I.E.R)., and Crooked Creek Elementary School.

Ms. Nugent continues to facilitate HOURGLASS events with Cox and looks forward to re-constituting Nugent Dance with upcoming performance Mapping the Aether, presented by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in January, 2016.
